Blue Wave Basketball Battles Against Stamford But Falls Short

By: Colin Sullivan
The Darien Blue Wave Men’s Basketball was unable to find its third win on Friday the 10th, and suffered a loss to the Stamford High School Black Knights. The final score of the game was 65 to 31.
Aggressive is the one word that can sum up the Black Knights’ performance. The Black Knights were not more talented, more disciplined, or better coached than Darien. Stamford was just much more aggressive and wanted to win the game much more than Darien did.
The Black Knights’ athleticism showed throughout the game as they constantly outran Darien. This game was Senior Captain Matt Lee’s first game back after being out for two weeks as a result of a leg injury. Matt led the team with eleven points.
The game started out slowly for the Blue Wave as Stamford outscored Darien 24 to 2 in the first quarter. Junior Liam Naughton was the only player on Darien to score in the first quarter.
The Blue Wave battled back and played much better in the second quarter, outscoring Stamford 15 points to 14, making the score at half time, Stamford’s 38 to Darien’s 17.
The second half of the game was only worse for Darien, as sharpshooter Liam Naughton suffered an injury to his ankle. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Stamford’s 57 to Darien’s 21.
In the final quarter of the game, Darien was able to outscore Stamford 10 points to 8, making the final score Stamford’s 65 to Darien’s 31. Even though the score may not reflect it, Darien never game up and played with heart and hustle until the final whistle. Darien was just unable to play four good quarters and rather just showed up for two of the four quarters.
Matt Lee and George Phillips were Darien’s two high scorers, each with eleven points. Darien now has only three games left in the season. They are playing Fairfield Warde away this Monday the 13th, Bassick this Wednesday the 15th, and their final game is next Wednesday the 22nd against Ludlow.
Darien is hoping to win at least two of their next three games in order to tie last year’s record of 3 wins.
