Boys JV Soccer Ties Brunswick 1-1

By Conor Davey
Last Tuesday, September 3, 2013, the Darien Boys Junior Varsity soccer team took on the Brunswick Bruins at Middlesex Middle School. The first and only scrimmage for the JV team, it was quite a new experience for the freshmen on the team. Brunswick, the boy’s private school out of Greenwich, is always strong competition. With a tough matchup and fairly little experience, it looked to be a difficult game for Darien.

Darien opened the scoring fairly early in the first half, with nice buildup play starting with junior captain Graham Skeats. Skeats played the ball to freshmen youngster Sam Pfrommer, who then sent an excellent pass to sophomore Will Simpson. With a few touches and a solid strike, the ball was in the back of the net and Darien was leading 1-0. Darien contained the lead into halftime but the game was not over yet.

The second half began and Darien went back to dominating the game. Several scoring chances resulted in a couple corner kicks; it only seemed like a matter of time until Darien scored again. Then Brunswick, off of a corner kick, counterattacked and the Darien defense was outnumbered. The primary forward for Brunswick received the ball at the top of the box and took a shot at the bottom right corner of the net. Sophomore goalie Nick Murphy made a full out dive but the shot was placed too perfectly. Brunswick had tied the game and the score line stayed the same for the rest of the match.

Captain Graham Skeats had some thoughts after the game, saying, “Even though we had only had one practice our team came together really well and we look strong for the rest of the season.
