Boys Swimming Starts Strong at State Trials

by Amanda Percarpio

On Saturday, March 15, the Blue Wave Boys Swim Team had its qualifying meet for States at Cornerstone-West Hartford. This meet was essentially a preliminary meet for the finals. Nearly all of the boys qualified and they did a fantastic job, finishing in fast, impressive times.

Some of the best performances were led by sophomore Zac Pear, who scored 1st in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.73 and 2nd in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.24. Furthermore, Pear, PK Brannigan (sophomore), Nicolai Ostberg (junior), and Owen Brannigan (senior) finished 2nd in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:30.71.  The team also finished 2nd in the 400-yard freestyle relay with Pear, Ostberg, PK Brannigan, and Dylan Gilhooley (junior) with a time of 3:19.54. Gilhooley helped the team again by finishing 3rd in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.28.

Because of the great performances led by the boys, the team is on pace to get second in the State Finals on Wednesday, March 19th at Wesleyan. The team knows that it will be top three, but it is aiming for the first place after losing by only 2 points last year to Wilton. “Hopefully if the boys bring it we’ll get first,” says captain Owen Brannigan. Let’s hope the boys can step up to the plate against rival and strong competitor Wilton on Wednesday!

The boys huddle in preparation for the State finals.
