Wave Puck Cruises Past South Windsor

by Michael Cassidy

On Saturday, March 15th, the Blue Wave Boys hockey team took on South Windsor at 4:00 in the CIAC quarterfinals. Darien came in as the fourth seed, but knew not to underestimate South Windsor (the 12th seed), who just upset Ridgefield in the previous round. At the start of the first Darien came out quick, with senior Dillon Fitzpatrick finding the back of the net just 13 seconds into the game, off of a pass from junior Craig Miller. As the period continued, Darien kept the shots rolling, but South Windsor’s sophomore goalie Scott Skenyon was on his game, preventing Darien from scoring any goals for the remainder of the period. Despite Darien’s 12 shots on net and numerous opportunities, the Blue Wave could not score.

As the second period came, Darien continued to roll; in this period they were able to find the back of the net multiple times, with Fitzpatrick scoring his second goal of the game. His goal led the charge and Darien began to find their groove. Shortly after, the Blue Wave found the net on a power play; this time it was senior Tommy Watters, who continues to impress all witnesses with his stick skills, scoring a highlight-reel goal to boost Darien’s lead to 3-0.

Darien’s success did not stop there. Another goal came during the second period, this time from senior Robby Jutterbock. If the game was not sealed up already, this goal pretty much sealed it up. Nearing the end of the game, freshmen Max Romeyn gave the town of Darien a future to be very excited about, as he showed his capability to score a goal in the CIAC quarterfinals as a mere 9th grader. Romeyn’s goal was the final goal of the game, leading Darien to a 5-0 victory. The Blue Wave made a statement win as they dominated a strong South Windsor team in every way. Senior goalie Michael Colon, who continues to impress everyone, just gave the state more evidence as to why he is the best goalie in the state with yet another shutout.

“I think that we played one of our best games of the season yesterday. We came out strong and maintained inequity until the final buzzer. We’re happy with the win and looking forward to Wednesday’s game at Yale” senior Forward Connor Davis said.

With that win, Darien advances to the semi-finals for the second straight season.

Come Support Darien Wednesday night as they take on the number one team in the state, Notre Dame of Fairfield.

Senior Dillon Fitzpatrick takes a shot during a regular
season game from earlier in the year.
