Clayton Kershaw Scratched From US Home Opener

by Jake Frasca

Opening day, in any sport, has always been one of the most highly anticipated games of the season, especially when it kicks off in the Sydney Cricket Grounds of New South Wales, Australia. The Dodgers took on the Diamondbacks, and two time Cy-Young award winner Clayton Kershaw was given the. As expected, the Dodgers’ prized ace struck out seven and only allowed one run through six and a third innings pitched. Los Angeles’ bats continued to shine for the remainder of the game as they won 3-1. All was fine for the first game of the season, except for Kershaw who seems to have aggravated an already-inflamed muscle in his back. Although it does not seem to be a long-term problem, the Dodgers will without a doubt be cautionary with the highest-paid pitcher in the MLB. With the continuing pain in his back, Don Mattingly, the Dodgers’ manager, was forced to scratch him from the start for the second game of the season.

When avid Dodgers fan and senior Ames Murray was asked about who would start the U.S. opener for the Dodgers, he said, “Most likely [Hyun-Jin] Ryu; he pitched well in Spring Training and the Dodgers will most likely not move Greinke up in the rotation because they like the matchup.” Ryu put up tremendous numbers for the Dodgers last season and seems to be in the front running for the start. No matter who gets the start, Kershaw will be treated for his sore back this weekend and continue to rehab.
