The score was 63-64 and senior Charlie Taylor had the ball with 11 seconds to make something happen. He did just that, finding an open lane and driving in for a lay-up with 1 second left to lead the #7 Celtics to a 65-64 win over the #3 Bobcats at the YMCA House Basketball semifinals on Feb 14.
The game started as a battle between the two point guards, Bobcats’ KLHT junior Max Reyes and Celtics’ senior Travis Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick scored the Celtics first eight points, and Reyes scored the Bobcats’ first seven points. The Celtics went into halftime with contributions from every player on the floor whether it was blocks from Taylor or rebounds from junior Sam McCarthy or points from junior Graham Maybell. The Bobcats went into halftime with a 30-27 lead behind the offensive firepower of Reyes and senior Mikel Marku.
Fitzpatrick and Reyes went at it again after halftime, with Taylor and Celtics’ senior Justin Miller and the Bobcats’ Marku joining the offensive fireworks. The fireworks settled into a 64-63 Bobcats lead with 11 seconds left, when Taylor drove to the hoop for the game winning lay-up. When it was all said and done the offensive juggernaut of Reyes and Marku combined for 54 of the Bobcats 64 points. Fitzpatrick led the Celtics in a spectacular game with 26 points.
