Darien defeats former national champions Xavier

-By: Ian Sullivan-

The Darien High School rugby team defeated Xavier High School from Manhattan this Saturday (5/1) in a thrilling upset of 32-22. Facing Xavier on their home court at Randall’s Island in Manhattan didn’t faze the Blue Wave. Senior flanker Max Schreyer and junior winger Daniel Campbell both had early tries (scores) to jumpstart the Blue Wave’s success to a 12-10 lead at halftime. Seniors Henry Glavin, TJ Ganser, and Niclas Rasmussen scored early in the second half. Then, with five minutes left, junior Sam McCarthy scored putting an end to the Xavier run. “Our defense was really good and on offense [senior captain] Connor McCarthy, Sam McCarthy and [junior scrum-half] Andrew McGarey made
great kicks that pinned
Xavier down and also contributed to some of our scores,” junior Daniel Campbell said after the game. The Blue Wave’s
next game will be at Royle School against St. Peters Preparatory High School (New Jersey) at 2:30 on Sunday May 16.
