Blue Wave Boys Soccer Beats NC 3-0

by Stephen Barston

On Friday, October 11, amidst a raucous student section, the Blue Wave Boys Soccer team defeated New Canaan 3-0. The game was characterized by a solid overall performance by the Blue Wave, with goals and assists coming from all throughout the roster.

The first Darien goal was scored relatively early on in the first half, a curving shot by Jack Kniffin from the right side of the box that found side netting and set the tone for the remainder of the game. During the course of the first half, New Canaan struggled to keep in the ball in their attacking third, as well as clearing the ball from in and around their own 18-yard box. Penetrating runs from junior center back John Mackie, turning up the pressure on the Rams defense, set up good opportunities for senior forwards Alex Gunya and Aidan Brannigan. These opportunities were eventually converted in the second half, when Gunya and fellow senior Graham Helgans both scored on rockets from within the box to solidify the win for the Blue Wave, with Helgans following up his goal with a beautiful celebration, reminiscent of Johnny Manziel

An overall command of possession and impeccable teamwork were two keys to victory for Darien, in a game that served as valuable experience for young players and marked another step in the right direction for Darien.

"We dominated most of the game and it was a really good win to put us on track to make the state tournament," Mackie said after the game.

Come see the Blue Wave take on Staples at home next Tuesday, October 15, on the Oval Turf at 4 PM, in the next step towards state qualification.
