Girls Cross Country Team Takes Fifth at FCIACS

by Alex Burke

This past Thursday, October 17th, the Girls Cross Country team raced in the FCIAC Championships. Darien finished fifth with a commendable 105 points. The race took place at Waveny Park in New Canaan at 2:10. About 60 Cross Country girls competed in either the 2.5-mile varsity race or the 1.5-mile freshman course.

“There were a lot of great improvements this season, and it really showed in the girls’ FCIAC performance. We had a great group of girls this year and I know they will continue to excel in the upcoming seasons,” senior captain Grace Evanich said. Senior Laura Howe improved her time from last year to this year by 1 minute 18 seconds. Sophomore Nicole Caputo also improved her final time by 1 minute 13 seconds.

“We lost almost all of our varsity team to graduation last year so what our team has built back up this season is not only impressive, but was also unexpected. There were nineteen teams competing so we were happy with fifth place and people’s individual improvements,” senior captain Kerry Donovan said. Junior Anne Johnston ranked 7th overall with a time of 14:53. Junior Erika Osherow ranked 21 with a 15:58 and Alex Ford was 25th overall running a time of 16:01.

Come support the Girls Cross Country team at Wickham Park in East Hartford where they will participate in the Class L state championships in a 5km race next Saturday October 26th!
