Darien Varsity Girls Field Hockey Ties Daniel Hand 1-1

By Erinn Ravosa

On Saturday October 5th, the Girls Varsity Field Hockey team took a long bus ride to Daniel Hand High School. The game that followed their arrival had the audience members going into hysterics.

Both teams had superb stick skills and speed, resulting in a neck and neck game. Daniel Hand got onto the scoreboard first due to an error in the Wave’s defense. However, the Wave tied the game when senior Clare Culliton tipped a ball into the left corner of the goal. This caused the level of tension between the teams to dramatically increase. As the game transitioned into the second half, the referees turned blind eyes to girls elbowing and pushing one another.

The Wave ended up dominating this half, with senior Katie Shanahan making many great block tackles. However, Darien could not get a goal. The team had many shots on goal that were saved by Daniel Hand’s goalie. This led to ten minutes of a crazy, intense overtime. The Wave stepped up their game and kept the ball on their offensive end the entire ten minutes. Even though the team had multiple shots on goal and many corners, they were unfortunately unable to score.

After the game ended, junior Kyra Fitzpatrick said, “I was so proud of the team! Everyone really stepped up their game and took it to the next level. Although we didn’t score, we definitely dominated!”

Come support the Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team during their next game tomorrow at 4:00pm on the DHS stadium.
