On Friday, February 7 the Girls Varsity basketball team
played an intense game against close rival Staples in order to qualify for
states. With a score of 40-30, the Blue Wave fought hard for victory.
The team began with an 8-0 run and finished the first
quarter with a leading score of 12-4. Junior Kate Richter started off the 2nd
quarter strong with an outside 3-pointer, and the team finished the half with a

under the hoop for quick rebounds, and senior Emily Stein swiftly finding
teammates to pass to.
During the third quarter, the intensity heightened when the
score started picking up and getting closer. The girls fought neck and neck and
ended the third quarter with a score of 24-20.
Darien knew they had to maintain their position during the 4th
quarter. Senior Kelly Karczewski made critical baskets to lead the team to
success. The girls skillfully held on, and the game ended with a satisfying
score of 40-30. The girls played strong and moved the ball with great
composure.
Coach Katie Lauten was beaming with pride at the end of the
game: “I’m very proud. The girls worked hard, they played great defense, and
I’m excited that we qualified for states.”
The girls are likely to have an exciting rest of the season
ahead of them. They will be celebrating their Senior Day in their next game
against Danbury on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
