On Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15, the members of
the Darien Boys and Girls track team competed in the New Balance Indoor National
Championship. The meet took place in New York, New York at the New Balance
Armory. Athletes competed all season in order to qualify for their respective
events. Over a dozen Darien athletes spent the weekend in New York competing,
and three new school records were set. The 4x1600 team set a new school record
with sophomore Army Noonan leading the pack with a 4:20 mile. Junior star Alex
Ostberg was unable to run due to bronchitis, however he was projected to place
extremely high in his events. Spencer “Big Throw” McKeough set a new school record
in shotput with a throw over 54 feet. He placed fourth in his emerging elite
class. In long jump, senior Nick Lombardo also set a new record with a jump of
22 feet and 5 ¾ inches. That jump put him in the top four for his class. On
Saturday, during the high jump event, Lombardo jumped 6’6” and placed top five
in the country, earning himself “All-American” status.
