Congratulations to the Lakers of the 11th/12th grade House Basketball
league on winning the championship against the Nuggets. It was a competitive
match-up that was led by two senior duos on both teams. Seniors Zach Basu and
Brendan Donohue of the Lakers kept to their usual game plan of attacking the
rim while seniors Brad Magnusson and Austin Crane utilized the three-pointer as
part of their arsenal. A well-contested match the whole game, the Nuggets ended
up staging a late comeback led by Magnusson and Crane but unfortunately fell short
of the mark. The difference maker of the game turned out to be junior John
Mackie, who used his height (6’1”) and wingspan to provide stops while also
knocking down numerous jumpers.
With about eight minutes to play in the second half, the
Nuggets’ shots began to fall and they started to chip away at the then-20 point
deficit. A couple of three-pointers and second chance points were pivotal in
igniting the Nugget’s comeback. With a couple seconds remaining, a
controversial no-call on Austin Crane led to the Lakers inbounding the ball.
The final score ended up being 54-51 Lakers, a great way for the four seniors
on the team to finish up their House Basketball careers. But do not be fooled;
the Nuggets were one of the best teams of the year and made it an exciting game
to watch.
