Last night, March 12th, 2014, in Avon, CT, the
Blue Wave Boys Basketball team took on the tenth-seeded Avon Falcons in the
round of 16 in the Class L State Tournament.
Darien took a 10-point lead to start the game, and finished the first
quarter with a score of 14-4. Avon then
scored a pair of threes to start the second quarter. In the first few minutes of the second, senior
Chima Azuonwu picked up his 2nd foul of the game, sending him to the
bench for the rest of the half. Avon
took advantage of this and closed the gap to six points before the half ended,
with Darien ultimately leading 25-19.
Coming out to start the second half, Avon played a 2-3 zone on defense, and stopped the Wave by slowing down their momentum. At the end of the third quarter, the Wave were down by four, 47-43. However, no one was counting them out yet, as Azounwu looked relentless in the paint, and fellow senior Matt Staubi was not going to take no for an answer. However, Avon was able to contain both of these stars to maintain a lead and control the game until the buzzer sounded.

Unfortunately, now the season
for the Blue Wave Basketball team is over, but, then again, there is always
next year. All in all, it was certainly a season to
be remembered for the members of this Darien team. Senior Captain Ames Murray said, “This was by
far the best season that I’ve been a part of, and even though we lost, we look
back on our season and we know we pushed ourselves to our max potential, day in
and day out.”
Senior George Phillips throws one down earlier in the season. |
