Playing in New Haven on Wednesday (3/20), the Darien Boys
Hockey team took on 1st seeded Notre Dame-Fairfield in the State Semifinals.
Although it was tied with just four minutes remaining in the 3rd period, Darien
found the net twice more and finished with a 3-1 win.
Although ND-Fairfield was the first to score, senior Michael
Colon was determined to make it the Lancers’ last goal and fended off 21 shots over
the course of the game.
Darien, however, struck back, as senior captain Tommy
Watters tied the game. “We came out hard and kept up the intensity even after
they scored. Our style of play got away from us at the end of the 1st period,
but we got our mojo back in the last two and were able to capitalize on opportunities
and control the game,” junior Tiger Sullivan said.
The scored remained tied at 1-1 until just minutes remaining
in the game, when Watters beat the goalie when he took the puck from neutral
ice and found the top corner on a 2-on-1. Darien solidified its lead with a
shot from senior captain Nick Allam, making the final score 3-1.
Darien advances to the state finals for the first time since
1987 and will face Fairfield Prep, whom they have met twice in the regular
season and beat both times. The finals will take place on Saturday (3/22) at 2
p.m. at Ingalls Rink (the Yale Whale). “The finals should be very intense, but
we are confident with our play and are ready to go all out. A big fan base
would really help,” Sullivan stated.
