On Wednesday, March 5, the Boys Blue Wave Hockey team took
on the Trinity Catholic Crusaders at Terry Connors. It was the FCIAC semifinals,
and the winner would be advancing to the finals. Prior to the game, Darien saw
their rival, New Canaan, win an overtime thriller against Ridgefield and
advance to the FCIAC finals. Watching this surely gave Darien players a spark
and made them want to win even more, so that they could face the Rams again,
after the last meeting between the two teams ended in a tie.
Darien was on fire as soon as they took the ice. For
practically the entire first period, the puck was held in Trinity’s zone, as
Darien dominated in shots and time on attack. Despite a dominating first
period, Darien could not produce a goal, courtesy of great goaltending by
Trinity Catholic’s goalie.
After a scoreless first period, Darien was able to finally
put numbers on the board; starting them off was senior Dillon Fitzpatrick, who scored
the first. Shortly after, senior captain Tommy Watters scored a highlight reel
goal, as he left the defenseman and goalie both dazzled once the puck reached
the back of the net. After the second, Darien felt fairly secure with a 2-0
lead.
Midway through the third, junior defenseman Nick Tuz added
to the lead off of an assist from senior forward Connor Davis. With that lead,
Darien went up 3-0, and from then on took a more safe approach that aggressive
to finish off the game. The final score was 3-1, after Trinity scored a goal in
the final minute, robbing Darien from recording their 8th shutout of the
season.
“It was a game we couldn’t overlook, and it was a hard-fought
game. We were happy to get the win and look forward to playing our arch-rival
New Canaan in the FCIAC finals on Saturday,” Davis said.
Come watch the Blue Wave play in the FCIAC finals, at 3:00
on Saturday versus their rival New Canaan. The game will be played at Terry
Connors Ice Rink in Stamford, and it is the biggest game of the season so
far.
