On Wednesday, March 12, the Darien Boys Varsity Hockey team
took on the Greenwich at the Darien Ice Rink. It was the first round of the
State Tournament. Darien was coming off of a 5-2 defeat in the FCIAC Tournament
finals against rivals New Canaan. After a tough loss, Darien players were sure
to come out strong in order to advance.
After a short delay due to cleaning the ice, Darien began
their journey in the first round of the State Tournament. The Blue Wave
instantly took control of the game, refusing to let Greenwich get past their defense.
Finally, about halfway through the first period, Darien was on the scoreboard.
Quickly after Darien scored their first goal, they put the puck in the back of
the net again, ending the first period 2-0.
Darien was still on fire in the second period but could not
get another goal. They were dominating in attack, as well as in defense, but simply
could not produce. Greenwich’s goalie was doing his job by protecting the net.
As the third period was on its way, Greenwich scored off of a
rebound after one of Darien senior goalie Michael Colon’s saves. Greenwich was
only down by one goal with just five minutes left in the game, but Darien
senior Dillon Fitzpatrick scored an empty netter with less than 50 seconds to go
to make the final score was 3-1.
Come watch the Darien Boys Varsity Hockey team play Windsor in
the quarterfinals in their next States game on Saturday, March 15th.
