On Monday, September
30, Darien Boys Basketball squared off against Trinity Catholic in a Fall
League exhibition game. Darien crushed the Crusaders 52-39, led by stars including
senior captain Matt Staubi and senior Chima Azuonwu, both of whom scored 18
points each
After losing the
tip, the Blue Wave got off to a hot start scoring 11 points in the first 2
minutes, while Trinity only had 3. Both
teams were playing a 2-3 zone defense trying to limit points in the paint. Darien played solid defense throughout the
game but struggled offensively, something they need to work on. Darien did well on the boards being led in
that department by Azuonwu, who had many put backs, one being followed by a
menacing roar. This was a big win for
Darien, and Staubi said, “It was a great confidence booster. I’m not sure when the last time Darien beat
Trinity Catholic in basketball, [and] while it’s only Fall League, it is proof
that we can play with anyone”. Although
Darien got the win and played well they still need to work on a few things to
be a contender in the FCIAC. Staubi
said, “We have a lot of things to work on.
When you are trying to build a program you cannot afford to not work. Right now he have to prove we are a
consistent team and we need to clean up a lot of things. There are some lapses on defense that in a
close game we cannot afford to have, and people need to be in certain spots at
certain times, but that will all come with more and more practice.”
Darien’s next game
is October 2nd at 8 pm at The Stamford YMCA.
