Saturday, October 26th seemed to be a bittersweet
day for the Blue Wave Girls’ Cross Country team. The varsity 7 was expecting it
to be the last meet of the season, and for veteran runner Anne Johnston, a
final time at Wickham Park until senior year. Coach Steve Norris said that
there “was a chance” of qualifying for the Open meet, but that it would depend
on other team scores, and Darien’s average times.
Thankfully, Darien got lucky. The team finished 5th
in the Class L championship, narrowly beating out Fairfield Warde (and Cate
Allen) but losing to Wilton’s Sarah Healey and Connecticut teams Pomperaug and
Mercy. Anne Johnston finished 3rd overall. First-season runner Erika
Osherow finished 19th. Alex Ford took third place for Darien,
followed by freshman Ali Barnard, Amanda Percarpio, and Kate Halabi. Grace
Evanich rounded out 7th.
Even though the team finished 5th in the Class L
championship, Darien’s average time beat out the competition in the Class M and
LL races. The Wave will return to Wickham on Friday, November 1st
for the State Open championship, running the exact same 3.1 mile race as
Saturday.
Senior captain Alex Ford said that she is “beyond” excited
that the team gets to go to states, especially for her last (potential) meet of
her high school cross country career. “At the beginning of the season, we
didn’t think we would have any sort of varsity team, and now we are up there
with the top schools in the state, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Ford said.
