Last Wednesday, October 9, 2013, the Darien Boys Junior Varsity soccer team took on the Wilton
Warriors at Allen Meadows Park in Wilton. With a successful season thus far,
the JV team faced one of its toughest opponents against a very physical Wilton
team. Coming off of a win versus Danbury, the Darien boys were coming in full
of confidence.
Wilton opened up the
scoring in the waning minutes of the first half. With a nice pass in by a
winger and a superb shot from the Wilton striker, the score was 1-0 and the
confidence faltered for Darien. The next goal came quickly after the restart
with a Wilton forward blazing down the field and slotting the ball passed
Brendan Berrigan, the freshmen goalkeeper. Although the score line does not
reflect it, goalkeepers Berrigan and sophomore Nick Murphy played excellently
with both making some fantastic saves during the game.
Halftime came and the
game began once again with Darien determined to fight back. With numerous
crosses and corner kicks, the JV boys just kept going at the solid Wilton
defense. The next two goals for Wilton were due to swift counter attacks at
precise moments when most of the Darien players were up field. The young
backline stood their ground yet the Wilton forwards scored two sublime goals.
Junior captain of the
Varsity squad, Henrik Stockinger, had this to say about the game: “The JV squad
is a talented team with tons of potential. It was a hard fought game against a
very good Wilton team and the score line did not show how close the game
actually seemed.”
