The Darien Blue Wave football team played St. Joes on
Saturday (10/5) in Trumbull. Both teams went into the game undefeated and
contenders for the FCIAC championship. Darien won the coin toss and elected to
receive the ball for the first half.
The first
quarter was a back and forth offensive brawl, and with 4:45 left in the
quarter, senior Myles Ridder intercepted a St. Joes pass to put the ball back
in Darien’s hands. Senior running back Jay Harrison ran the ball for one yard
into the end zone to put Darien up six points. Daly Hebert kicked in the PAT
for an extra point.
By the
quarter’s end, sophomore Mark Evanchick tallied two sacks for the Darien
defense. Prior to these two sacks by Evanchick, the St. Joes quarterback had
not been sacked all season. With 7:39 left in the second quarter, St. Joes
punched the ball in to make it a tie game. However, with 31 seconds left in the
half, Jay Harrison plowed in another six points to put Darien up 14-7.
St. Joes
tied up the game with a quick score early in the third quarter. The game
remained tied at the end of the third. However, with 2:49 left in the game, St.
Joes found themselves up by two scores, and the game shortly ended after. This
was Darien’s first loss since last season’s game against state powerhouse
Staples.
Darien is
lined up to play Fairfield Warde at Fairfield this Saturday (10/12).
