After an incredibly successful regular
season of which highlights included winning the Manchester Invitational,
finishing first in the FCIAC East Conference, and being ranked the 33rd
best team in the nation, Darien High School Boys Cross Country hoped to carry
their winning ways into the FCIAC championships at Waveny Park on October 17th.
Running in the varsity race were veteran seniors Marshall Huffman, Brian Davey,
Colten Appleby, Ben Olsen, and Peter Kreuch, junior Alex Ostberg, and sophomore
Armstrong Noonan.
Unfortunately
for the Wave runners, the meet ended in relative disappointment as the team
fell to Ridgefield, placing in 2nd overall. Darien finished with a
commendable 59 points while Ridgefield came three points from tying the
all-time meet low with 27 points, an almost unheard of feat for a non-favorite
competitor.
Though the team may have
been overshadowed by Ridgefield’s outstanding performance, the results indicate
that Darien has nothing to be ashamed of. Although he finished second overall,
number one runner Alex Ostberg bested the prior Waveny course record with a
time of 15:18. He was one of only two runners in the FCIAC Championship race to
run faster than a five-minute-per-mile pace.
Of the race, Captain
Colten Appleby said, “We ran well but there really wasn’t anything we could do.
Ridgefield ran out of their mind.”
Watch out for Wave XC as
they strive to continue their success at CIACs on October 26th at
Wickham Park.
