Darien Girls’ Varsity Soccer traveled to Westport for an away game against Staples on Friday October 18th. The team had a rough first half, playing frantically and trying to find its momentum. The first half ended with a goal by Staples off a penalty kick due to a hand ball by a Darien player. At halftime Staples led 1-0. However, halftime changed the game for the Blue Wave.
“At halftime our coach yelled at us and told us that all the success we've had doesn't matter unless we continue to play well. We came out strong,” senior Lisa Travaglini said. The girls outran Staples the second half. They had total control of the game along with great ball movement that led to multiple shots on goal. Senior Morgan Sawitsky scored Darien’s first goal of the game within the first 10 minutes of the second half. Closely after senior Dillon Schoen had a great goal on a free kick outside the box on the 18. Late in the second half, Sawitsky had another goal from inside the box putting the team up 3-1 against Staples. In the final 18 seconds of the game, sophomore Grace Harmon scored off a great pass from senior Emily Stein. This made the final score Darien 4, Staples 1.
“After halftime we came alive. We started playing smart, unselfish, and aggressive which I think made the difference in the second half,” senior Captain Emily Stein said.
