Captain Kanigan rallies Wave to FCIAC Semi-Finals

By Jack Rehm - After losing to Westhill in the first game of the season (only to get the win back via a forfeit) 7-1, there was little reason to believe that the Blue Wave would win today (10/28) in the first round of the FCIAC Tournament. The boys, though, got off to a quick start today with an early goal from junior Marcus Iqbal. Iqbal scored off a throw in from senior captain Elliott Helgans with 30 minutes remaining in the first half and his goal was followed up later in the half by senior captain Eric Kanigan. The Blue Wave dominated throughout the first half, keeping the ball in the Westhill side of the field for most of the period but the second half was a different story. Westhill came out at halftime looking like a different team, being much more aggressive and seized control early in the half. They scored an early goal to cut the Darien lead in half and were later able to tie the game at 2. In the first half of overtime Kanigan was awarded a penalty kick and was able to convert to put the Blue Wave in the lead again. This time, they would not look back and went on to win by that score. Boys soccer returns to action this Tuesday (11/1) in the second round of the FCIAC Tournament where they will play Trumbull.
