JV Field Hockey defeats New Canaan as its season comes to a close

By Caitlin Keady
The Girls JV Field Hockey team pulled a 7-1 win over the New Canaan Rams this Monday (10/24) as its season nears the end. The game began with a goal by New Canaan in the first 10 minutes making the score 0-1, but that would be the only goal the freshman goalie Morgan Spar let in. “We freaked out a bit after the first goal but recovered very quickly and came back really strong.” Sophomore Colleen Heaney said. Darien managed to stay on the Rams’ side for the beginning of the game making several blocked attempts on goal. "After about 10 or so minutes, we really get our heads in and focused on the game." Sophomore Megan Kristof said. Darien also missed a corner in the first 20 minutes but Heaney scored making the score 1-1. "We pulled together really well and that is what counts" Kristof said. Several more attempts on goal were made but they were blocked by the New Canaan goalie. The action stayed on the New Canaan side of the field for most of the game. “Our passing was really on and our forwards really stepped it up.” Heaney said. Darien made two more goals around the 20-minute mark and one around the 35 minute mark, all three made by Heaney. With the score in Darien’s favor, the half ended with a score of 4-1. The Blue Wave remained on the New Canaan side of the field for most of the second half of the game and played very well offensively. Sophomore Mary O’Boyle made a goal during the first five minutes of the second half and another by freshman Kyla Johns making the score 6-1. The final goal of the game was made by freshman Erika Osherow making the final score 7-1, Blue Wave. “We played really well,” coach Kari Johns said, “we had great teamwork and we moved the ball down the field nicely.”
