The Girls Varsity Tennis Team extended its winning record to 5-2 this season with a victory over Ridgefield on Wednesday, May 6. In a score of 5-2 in matches, Darien faced early competition at the top of the singles ladder, but had an easier time defeating Ridgefield in the doubles matches. Senior Annie Wilson (pictured below), who played #1 singles, and junior Alex Budd, playing #2 singles, both went to a third set but were unable to get the win. “If Alex hadn’t been out for two months, I’m sure it would have gone her way,” Girls Varsity Tennis Coach Davin Gebauer said. Lonneke Eenkema Van Dijk, a sophomore who played #3 singles against Ridgefield, won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, as did sophomore Sophie Doering (pictured above) at #4 singles, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Seniors Courtney Whiting and Lindsay Battey, who played #1 doubles, were very strong on the court, winning 6-1, 6-2. The other two doubles teams also went without dropping a set. The girl’s team is heading into a difficult upcoming week, where they will play Staples on Monday, Fairfield Ludlowe on Tuesday, and Fairfeld Warde on Wednesday. However, they are still looking to maintain a winning record.
